Menno's Story

Menno is a fine example of what is possible when someone is surrounded by opportunities, trust and support. His cheerfulness, dedication and open heart colour the world around him—at home, on the dance stage and at Brownies&downieS.

Menno is a cheerful 24-year-old young man with Down syndrome who has spent his entire life demonstrating how much you can achieve when you are given opportunities and seize them. From the start, he attended a mainstream primary school, where committed teachers and excellent support ensured that he could develop at his own pace. At home, his parents and older sister were always there to practise with him, encourage him and stimulate him—with patience, love and a great deal of perseverance.
Sport and exercise play a major role in Menno's life. He has been playing hockey in a team persons with disabilities for years, enjoys skiing and always looks forward to moments when he can burn off his energy. But his greatest passion is dancing. At Danstheater Lien, he can completely be himself: free, rhythmic, full of expression. He can show who he is, in his own way and with his own talent.

Menno also shines in his work. At Brownies&downieS Capelle aan den IJssel, he enjoys going to work every day. The friendly atmosphere, the contact with guests and the feeling of really being part of the team make this place special to him. At work, he not only receives appreciation, but also the opportunity to actively participate in society.
